Objectives
Abstract The TiWear project is investigating the feasibility of applying a novel, wear resistant surface to titanium components for wells. Titanium is a highly attractive material because of its corrosion resistance, particularly in saline conditions, but has very poor tribological properties. This results in galling and rapid wear on moving components. A novel approach to producing a hard surface has been developed for other applications, based on the incorporation of ceramic structures near and at the surface of the parent material.
